JERUSALEM ( Associated Press) — Israeli troops shot and killed a knife-wielding Palestinian woman in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The Israeli army said a knife-wielding assailant approached a soldier “performing routine security activities” north of the West Bank city of Hebron and the soldiers opened fire. No soldiers were injured in the incident, she added.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said the woman, identified as Ghafran Warasna, died after being shot in the chest near Al Aroub refugee camp.
Violence between Israelis and Palestinians has intensified in recent weeks, with almost daily raids by the army on Palestinian-administered areas of the West Bank, following a series of deadly attacks by Palestinians that left at least 19 Israelis dead.
Tensions flared after the murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who worked for Al Jazeera, and an ultra-nationalist march down a Palestinian street in East Jerusalem.
In recent weeks, at least 35 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces. Many of them were carrying out attacks or participating in confrontations with Israeli forces in the West Bank. But the death list also includes Abu Akleh, an unarmed woman and two others who appear to be bystanders. Rights groups say Israel often uses excessive force.
