It is a vitamin that helps in improving the health of neurons and blood

Eating a balanced diet is important for maintaining the body’s well being and guaranteeing proper functioning of the body. This will make it possible to get the right vitamins and nutrients, which scientists have been studying for many decades.

Some of these vitamins and nutrients may have specific beneficial effects on the health of specific parts of the body. The same is the case with vitamin B12, which has a multitude of functions in the body.

It was only relatively recently that this vitamin was identified by medical science. As noted in a report on nutrition by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, for its abbreviation in English)., More than a century ago, scientists identified a condition known as pernicious anemia.

Among other symptoms, it causes loss of appetite, pale skin, redness of the tongue, bleeding gums, and other common symptoms in other diseases such as nausea and diarrhea. But during the 1920s doctors realized that patients who had been diagnosed with pernicious anemia began to recover once they ate raw liver.

There were even some medicinal developments that materialized these findings. “This discovery led to the preparation of a liver extract that, when given as an injection, controlled the disease,” FAO said.

For years they knew they could reduce symptoms by consuming liver, but they could not find the reason why patients improved their condition by consuming it.

It was not until the 1940s, specifically 1948, that scientists were able to isolate a component that improved the condition of patients with pernicious anemia. Since then they have named it B12.

“When this substance was given in very small amounts by injection, it was effective in treating pernicious anemia.” FAO warned.

What is Vitamin B12 used for?

But the benefits of Vitamin B12 are not limited to treating anemia only, rather it fulfills many fundamental functions for the human organism.

In fact, FAO has pointed out that It is important for the body to produce an adequate number of healthy red blood cells.

“Vitamin B12, like other B vitamins, is important for protein metabolism. It helps with the formation of red blood cells and maintenance of the central nervous system.warns Medline, the health information platform of the United States National Library of Medicine.

One of the main sources of vitamin B12 is found mainly in foods of animal origin, especially meat. According to Medline, this component is present in fish, beef, poultry, eggs, milk and other dairy products.

That source also warns that sometimes this vitamin can be found in other foods that are not necessarily of animal origin, such as cereals that are fortified and other nutritional yeasts.

However, there are people who may be especially susceptible to low levels of vitamin B12. According to Medline, at-risk populations are:

  • Adults over the age of 50.
  • People on a vegetarian or vegan diet.
  • Patients who have had stomach or intestinal surgery.
  • Those who have a digestive condition such as celiac disease (in which there is a problem with absorbing gluten) or Crohn’s disease (which affects the gut).

In turn, that medical information forum warns that people who have low levels of vitamin B12 may present with anemia-like conditions and symptoms such as loss of balance, numbness in the hands and feet and a persistent feeling of weakness.

,The best way to meet your body’s vitamin B12 needs is by consuming a variety of animal products., Madeline ends.
