Jada Pinkett Smith tearfully interviews former Miss USA Chesley Christa’s mother

Jada Pinkett Smith had a hard time introducing the latest guest on her talk show, red table talkThe mother of former Miss USA Chesley Crist, who committed suicide in January this year.

The trio watched a montage about the pageant winner’s life and career, before being joined by Chesley’s mother April Simpkins, Pinkett Smith, her daughter Willow Smith, and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.

“Not many knew that beneath it all, Chesley was battling debilitating depression,” Pinkett Smith said in a voiceover.

When the camera cut for the trio watching the montage, Pinkett Smith burst into tears before speaking and was comforted by her daughter.

During the episode, Simpkins talked about the day Krist died, including reading the last text he received from his daughter. “I would read a few sentences and then I would just collapse,” she said.

Krist passed away on January 30, 2022.

Simpkins said her daughter suffers from “high-functioning depression,” where someone who appears to be fine suffers silently, and revealed that she had attempted suicide in the past.

Krist, who was also a lawyer, was crowned Miss USA in 2019 as Miss North Carolina. She made history that year alongside Nia Imani Franklin, Kaleigh Garris and Zozibini Tunzi, marking the first time that black women had won all four major titles in competition history.
