It is very possible that you have never heard of JAECOO, a new Chinese brand created under the wing of the automotive giant Chery Group. But in Autocosmos we have written many times about him since we knew he was coming to Chile with the new Omoda, and then, when we met him live during our trip to China, and we even drove his cars.
It is worth mentioning that JAECOO is complementary to Omoda and one cannot exist without the other. While the second will target customers with an active lifestyle, JAECOO is “designed for the urban elite with unique tastes.”
Initially, JAECOO debuted with JAECOO 7 and JAECOO 9. The first is a medium SUV twin directly with the new Chery TJ-1, with 5 seats; the second is a 7-seater SUV based on the new Tiggo 9.
But now, taking advantage of Chery Group’s Technology Day 2023, JAECOO has shown the JAECOO 8, which also uses eye-catching patents that say J8.
JAECOO 9 above and JAECOO 8 below, they are the same.
New car? No, the same JAECOO 9 that it replaced. In consultation with some partners who are in China, they told us that it is actually the same JAECOO 9, a maneuver that will allow in the future to launch a larger SUV within the JAECOO brand that uses the number 9 .
And Chery is immersed in a dizzying process of creating brands to cover almost every market in the world. Omoda and JAECOO were born with that ambition, to use Chery and Exeed models and go out to conquer more complex markets, such as Europe and the United States. And for the same reason he continues to improvise. For example, it is known in China that the Exeed RX will be sold as Omoda 9. We do not know if that will happen in Chile, but it should not be ruled out.
The “new” J8
JAECOO 8 or simply J8 is a large seven-passenger SUV measuring 4,818 mm in length and 2,800 mm between the axles, built on the new T2X platform, which is an evolved version on the previous T1X modular base. It has independent suspension on both axles (McPherson front and multilink rear) and disc brakes on all four wheels.
The design of all JAECOO has a large waterfall grille, a visual effect given by several chrome bars in a vertical arrangement. The headlights are divided, leaving the LED DRLs on the top attached to the grille, while below, near the lower corner of the bumper, are the main headlights divided by two independent projectors.
The dark pillars stand out and harmonize with the black roof, offering a classic two-tone body look. In the background there are horizontal lights that appear to be combined with a black strip. Two-tone 19 or 20-inch wheels (with red calipers) and chrome roof bars complete a very well-designed package.
The interior is very surprising due to its careful design and high perceived quality, which according to the brand is inspired by the traditional paper work of Chinese culture. The flat-bottom steering wheel with controls stands out, and it is clear that there are screens integrated as is the fashion today, both 12 inches for the cluster and the infotainment system, which offers connection to Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, in addition to GPS navigation.
The center console is long and wide, but very clean in its design. There is a small gear lever and a rotary knob to control various functions, while offering many covered areas to leave things. Under this console there is plenty of space to store anything.
The brand wants to differentiate itself with its equipment, so it announces between 9 and 10 airbags, a dozen driver assistance devices (ADAS), head-up display, front and rear sensors that has a 360 ° camera, ambient lighting, heated front seats. and ventilated and has electric adjustment, leather upholstery, sunroof, wireless charger, electric gate, and more.
The JAECOO 8 or J8 will be offered with a four-cylinder gasoline engine, with direct injection and turbocharging. This is the 2.0 TGDI that generates 251 HP of power and 400 Nm of torque, and will be attached only to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (7DCT). It will be offered in a single-wheel drive or AWD version.
Now it remains to be seen if it will land in Chile with the name JAECOO 8 or J8.
