Jalen Hurts and Eagles agree to $255 million extension

PHILADELPHIA ( Associated Press) — Jalen Hurts was named the shooting guard for Patrick Mahomes in NFL MVP voting and again when Mahomes’s Kansas City Chiefs beat Hurts’ Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

But no other quarterback is ahead of Hurts in terms of his contract. The Philadelphia franchise player is on track to become the player with the highest average value in league history.

Hearts has agreed a $255 million, five-year extension with the Eagles, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The agreement includes a guaranteed amount of 179.3 million.

According to the person who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, the Eagles announced Monday that “QB1 is staying” but did not release contract details because the deal had not yet been finalized.

Hurts was rewarded after a season in which he established himself as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. He was a finalist for the Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award and led Philadelphia to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles tweeted, “The Leader is still in Philly.” “We have agreed with Jalen on a 5-year extension until the 2028 season.”

Hurts, 24, aims to make $51 million per season – which would surpass Green Bay’s Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers. Only Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson ($230 million) and Arizona’s Kyler Murray ($189.5 million) received more money in a single contract.

“Our job in the league is to go out there and win games and get paid to do that. I’m glad the guys who are doing things the right way are getting the long-term contract security they deserve,” Mahomes said Monday. .

Those numbers may soon be assumed, based on contract negotiations between the Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson. In a series of tweets, Starr asked to be traded on March 2. Days later, the Ravens tagged the franchise to him and still hoped they could reach a long-term deal.

Hurts had a record-breaking performance in the Super Bowl. He passed for 304 yards and a touchdown, ran for 70 yards and three scores, as well as tied the game with a two-point conversion.

Philadelphia was 14–1 in games started. He had 3,701 passing yards, 760 rushing yards, and 35 total touchdowns in the regular season.

Under head coach Nick Siriani, the Eagles finished as the NFC’s top seed, defeating the New York Giants in the playoffs and the San Francisco 49ers in the conference finals.

The Eagles missed the two games that Hurts missed at the end of the season because of a right shoulder strain.

The franchise surprised when they took Hurts out of Oklahoma in the second round of the 2020 draft. They had Carson Wentz as the firm starter at quarterback and had other, more pressing needs.

Hurts was going to be Wentz’s backup, but ended up taking over from him and becoming one of the most talented young quarterbacks in the NFL.
