Japan executed the killer of 7 people in Akihabara

Japanese authorities killed a man convicted of stabbing seven people to death in Tokyo’s infamous Akihabara electronics district in 2008. This hanging is the first time in Japan this year.

as reported AFP, Tuesday (26/7/2022), reports on the execution of Tomohiro Kato were carried by Japan’s national television, NHK and several other local media outlets. Japan’s Justice Ministry declined to confirm local media reports.

The deadly attack started with the crash of Kato’s truck, which he was driving into a crowd of people. Kato again attacked with a knife on June 8, 2008. To the police at the time, Kato said: “I came to Akihabara to kill people. It doesn’t matter who I kill.”

Kato was arrested on the spot shortly after the indiscriminate attack, in which he rammed a two-ton truck into a crowd of pedestrians and jumped out of the truck and then stabbed random people.

Local police said Kato had documented his visit to Akihabara in an Internet bulletin forum. He types messages on his cell phone while driving a truck and complains about his unstable job and being alone.

Kato, the son of a banker, grew up in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, where he graduated from an excellent high school. But he failed to enter the university and received training as an auto mechanic.

Local prosecutors said Kato’s confidence had dropped dramatically when a woman he was chatting with online suddenly stopped emailing him after Kato sent a picture of himself.
