Japanese green ammonia giant IHI is joining Australian renewable hydrogen project HyNQ

The Japanese IHI Corporation, through its subsidiary IHI Engineering Australia has joined the team behind the massive project called HyNQ in which they participate Idemitsu Australia the Queensland Public Utility Company CS Energy and the local developer Energy settlement.

HyNQ, located in Queensland’s Colinsville Renewable Energy Zone, proposes to use wind and solar energy to power more than 1GW of electrolyser capacity at Abbot Point.

The newly formed consortium says the renewable hydrogen will be used to produce green ammonia, primarily for export markets, and liquid hydrogen for domestic customers in northern Queensland.

The Queensland government, represented by state-owned CS Energy in the consortium, has committed to spending $8.5 million to accelerate the transition of Abbot Point – with its current deep-water port – into an environmentally friendly export hub.

Vincent Dwyer Co-founder of Energy Estate, says the extensive exchange of experiences between the project developers is helping to maintain the pace of progress, including the completion of a comprehensive pre-feasibility study.

“IHI Corporation is recognized as a global leader and has already demonstrated its commitment to supporting the development of the green hydrogen industry in Australia,” Dwyer said.

Other Projects

In Queensland, IHI Engineering Australia was awarded the contract to build the Kogan renewable hydrogen demonstration plant near Chinchilla in the Western Downs, also in partnership with CS Energy, and adjacent to the Kogan Creek coal-fired power station.

In Tasmania, IHI works with the gas company Woodside Marubeni Corporation on plans to produce and export green hydrogen and ammonia from Bell Bay to Japan at the proposed facility H2Tas of 300 MW.

Kensuke Yamamoto Deputy Director of IHI Corporation, says the company sees HyNQ as an opportunity to ensure the long-term supply of green ammonia to the Japanese market.
