Japan’s sports superstar Yuzuru Hanyu is retiring from competitions

Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has been one of the most famous and successful athletes in Japan over the years. Now the superstar surprisingly announced on Tuesday that he will no longer participate in competitions.

The announcement came as a surprise to fans, but some were already expecting the bad news. The 27-year-old failed to win a medal at the Beijing Winter Olympics and became the first quad-axle runner at the Games. He also injured his ankle, from which he is yet to recover.

Hanyu is not dropping snow yet

However, Hanyu says he doesn’t want to retire entirely. He intends to continue working as a professional figure skater in show skating and quadruple pivot. In a press conference, he explained that he can no longer compete with the competition and no longer needs to be on the same platform as others.

But he wants to work on his weaknesses and return to his previous form. Hanu was very happy about this. He achieved everything he could. But now he doesn’t want to be judged by others. Because he wants to appreciate the sporting value of figure skating as a professional as well as pursue his ideals.

He feels determined and hopeful to start a new chapter. However, Yuzuru Hanyu is yet to reveal how things will continue. There are already plans, but he doesn’t want to publish any details just yet. But he hopes fans who have never seen him come to his performance.

At the 2014 Sochi Games, Yuzuru Hanyu became the first Japanese to win figure skating. He created another sensation with his new victory in PyeongChang in 2018. He was the first runner to win gold twice in 66 years.

In addition, Hanyu has won four consecutive Grand Prix finals and six national championships over the years. At the age of 23, he became the youngest person in the history of Japan to receive the People’s Honor Award for his achievements.
