BOSTON (NWN) — Phil Jurkovec ran for a touchdown in his surprise return to the starting lineup for Boston College, and the Eagles won their annual red bandana Friday night with a 17-3 win over Virginia Tech in a four-game losing streak. Stopped the streak. Play.
Jurkovec, 6-foot-5 junior, who injured his throwing arm in Week 2, was lost for the season following surgery. He completed only 7-in-13 passes for 112 yards, but gave the Eagles (5-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a spark in his absence after fixing a fumble on his first drive and scoring a TD. Gave. .
Pat Garvo ran for 116 yards on 30 carries and scored 3 yards for BC.
Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister walked into the first quarter with an undisclosed injury and did not return. He threw just one unfinished pass before the injury.
The backup Knox move completed 7 of 16 for 73 yards for the Hokies (4-5, 2-3). Malachi Thomas ran for 70 yards.
BC wore his special red bandana-trimmed uniform, continuing the tradition of honoring Eagles graduate Wells Crowther.
On September 11, 2001, Crowther, a former lacrosse player working at the World Trade Center, died while helping rescue people during the attack. The survivors identified him with a red bandana bearing his signature.
Jurkovec ran for 11 yards in the Eagles’ third offensive game, taking a forceful hit that spread it to the ground. He completed his initial pass before choosing his next pass.
But, in an interesting twist, Virginia Tech defensive back Dorian Strong stumbled on the return and was retrieved by Jarkovec when the Eagles took a 22-yard lead on the capture change to retrieve the ball in the Hawkeyes 13.
Two plays later, Jarkovec spun around the left for an 8-yard TD that took BC 7–0.
Jurkovec, who transferred from Notre Dame before last season and threw for more than 2,558 yards last year, is the most by a BC QB in his first 10 appearances.

Virginia Tech: Despite losing their starting QB, a disappointing performance certainly won’t help calm calls to replace head coach Justin Fuente until the Hokies come strong in their last three conference games.
Boston College: It looked like it was going to be a lost season, with the return of Jarkovec could take a sudden turn.
