Authorities say a prisoner in the Jefferson County work release program died of an apparent drug overdose in the bathroom of the store where he worked. This is the second death of a prisoner released by county work this week.
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, Lakewood Police contacted staff at the Jefferson County Detention Facility about the death of 30-year-old Sean William Hayes at around 6 pm on Thursday.
Hayes was imprisoned in Jefferson County Jail on April 24 for violating probation regulations. He was sentenced to a 90-day work release program on Monday and was transferred to the county’s Intervention Community Corrections Service Agency on Wednesday, a private, non-profit community corrections agency in Lakewood that includes a residential project.
On Tuesday, 26-year-old Damion Jeffcastle White was found unresponsive in the ICCS room. He was pronounced dead at the scene. White has been detained since July 1 and has been imprisoned on the crime of third-degree family assault. On July 14, he was transferred to community corrections.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. Lakewood police are investigating Hayes’ death.
