Jerry Douglas, star of Young and Restless, dies at 88

NEW YORK (AP) – Jerry Douglas, who played the handsome patriarch of the John Abbott family in Young and the Restless for over 30 years, has died.

According to a family spokesman, Douglas died on Tuesday after a short illness, just three days before his 89th birthday.

He last appeared on the CBS daytime soap in 2016.

“Our show is fortunate to have an actor of his caliber joining the cast of Y&R and introducing the famous Abbott family to the public,” said Anthony Morina, executive producer of Young and Restless, in a statement.

“His contribution to Y&R’s legacy as the patriarch of the Abbott family, John Abbott, is felt to this day. It will be sorely missed. “

Born in Jerry Rubinstein, he was a native of Chelsea, Massachusetts, attended Brandeis University on a football scholarship, but after graduation decided to pursue an acting career. His hundreds of credits include the films JFK and Dear Mommy, as well as the series Melrose Place and Barnaby Jones.

He was best known for Young and Restless, which he joined in 1982 as chairman of Jabot Cosmetics and a single father. Abbott’s character died in 2006, but Douglas continued to appear on the show as his ghost, most recently in 2016.

Douglas is survived by his second wife, actor Kimberly Banker, his three children and two grandchildren.
