Jets donates $1 million to aid relief efforts in Ukraine

NEW YORK – ( Associated Press) – Susan Johnson’s thoughts often turn to her late parents when she watches heart-wrenching video clips and news reports from outside Ukraine.

Sometimes it is too much to take. And she just desperately wants to help.

It’s all close to home for Johnson, the wife of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. His mother Mary was born to Ukrainian immigrant parents, while his father Stepan Ircha was from Ternopil – a city outside war-ravaged Kyiv – and emigrated to the United States himself when he was 21. .

“My mother passed away 10 years ago and my father passed away two years ago, and he may be turning in his grave right now,” Johnson told the Associated Press in a telephone interview.

“It would have killed him. It’s unbelievable and it’s the only word I can think of for what’s happening today.”

The jets on Tuesday announced a $1 million donation to aid the people of Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia on February 24. The donation will be divided among several organizations over the next year, each receiving $100,000.

“I wanted to do my part to help and bring awareness because this is a problem that is not going to go away,” said Susan Johnson.

“The money, they’ll need for a long time to rebuild and aid. It’s going to be there. So I hope we can start something. The world has been pretty generous and I hope it stays that way.” “

Johnson was born in the United States and grew up in New York, a Ukrainian neighborhood. She has contributed to Ukrainian organizations for many years, and used their contacts when she and her husband were deciding to help.

The first organization to receive donations from the Jets is Plast Scouting USA, which was founded in Ukraine in 1911 and focuses on urgent needs such as first aid kits and medical equipment and supplies in the country.

“What we wanted to do was find these organizations that have shoes on the ground, and they have ways to get stuff done right away,” Johnson said.

In a statement provided by the Jets, Plast Scouting USA President Andrew Kozak thanked the team for its donation.

“The funds will be used immediately to purchase critical medical supplies to treat many seriously injured Ukrainians,” Kozak said, “along with state-of-the-art medical technology such as portable, wireless ultrasound equipment.”

In addition to a monetary donation, Jets also offered employees the opportunity to donate medical supplies to aid in relief efforts. The organization will match all donated supplies in an expanded effort to help victims and their families.

“These donations will positively impact Ukrainian refugees and their families with essential supplies,” Woody Johnson said in a statement. “The need for resources is ever-increasing. Our thoughts are with the innocent people affected and all the victims.”

Several sports organizations and individuals have also assisted in aid and relief efforts over the past few months.

Football’s governing body FIFA donated $1 million to humanitarian efforts. Tennis star Roger Federer has dedicated $500,000 to improve access to continuing schooling for Ukrainian children. The four Grand Slam tennis tournaments and the sport’s governing bodies have jointly donated $700,000 to aid humanitarian relief efforts. Washington Commanders owners Tanya and Dan Snyder donated $300,000 to response efforts.

Susan Johnson said, “You see it in the movies and you hear about it, but you don’t see these things on the news channels on your television.”

“But now the whole world is watching it and it’s just so crazy. The scene is what has really hit this country and brought them together to fight this battle, helping a peaceful nation in the year 2022 which is just Wants to live and prosper.

“They have destroyed the country and it will take years to rebuild and it is so silly that I lack words. It is heartbreaking.”
