Ahmedabad: Airtel is giving Reliance Jio a huge edge in terms of subscribers across the country. Airtel has come first in this regard. But, Jio’s dominance is maintained in Gujarat. In less than four and a half years, Jio has become the largest telecom operator in the state and the company has topped the list in terms of subscribers in the state. According to figures released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for the month ended December, 2020, Jio added 3.36 lakh mobile numbers in Gujarat and became the largest telecom operator in the circle with a total of 2.54 crore subscribers.
According to TRAI, Reliance Jio started its services in September, 2016 and the company topped the circle by the end of December, 2020. Vodafone Idea, which has been a leader in the circle for nearly 25 years, lost about 1.62 lakh subscribers in December 2020, leaving it in second place with a total of 2.50 crore subscribers, according to a Trina report.

In addition to Jio, in December 2020, Airtel alone added 2.25 lakh subscribers to the state, a positive growth. With 1.14 crore subscribers, Airtel has 16.88 per cent subscribers. State-owned telecom company BSNL lost about 2.20 lakh subscribers during the period. By the end of December, 2020, BSNL Circle had 8.69 per cent subscribers with 58.91 lakh subscribers.
Following the performance of Jio and Airtel, there was a net increase of 2.09 lakh in mobile numbers in Gujarat, bringing the number of mobile subscribers in Gujarat to 6.77 crore in December, 2020. Jio and Vodafone Idea together account for 74.42 per cent of the total subscribers in Gujarat. Nationally, Airtel and Jio’s new subscribers also saw a sharp increase in December. In this, Jio got 4.78 lakh new customers.
