John Oliver Reveals ‘Complete Horse S**t’ Police Talking Point Over Drugs

John Oliver takes a deep dive into harm reduction strategies to prevent overdose deaths among drug users and, more specifically, why so many parts of the nation haven’t adopted them.

This is partly due to myths and misconceptions about both drugs and drug users, including the belief that even possessing fentanyl is dangerous to police and other first responders.

In Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight”, Oliver considered footage of a San Diego deputy after finding drugs in a car, along with a sheriff’s department voiceover claiming he “almost died” as a result.

Oliver said police departments across the country have made similar claims.

“What those officers were experiencing more were panic attacks,” Oliver said. “Which makes sense because they came into contact with something they’ve heard over and over again, anywhere near is fatal.”

It has also become a trope in TV shows including the hit CBS cop program “Blue Bloods”.

“That’s complete horse bullshit,” declared Oliver.

“It is irresponsible of the police to perpetuate the medical impossibility and for media outlets to continue to escalate it,” he said.
