1. This first called ‘Decoration Day’
The founder of this period was Major John A. Logan, who in 1868 issued a decree that soldiers should be killed in the Civil War every day of every year. Because the encouragement was to leave flags and flowers on the graves, today was called the day of decoration.

When General Logan created the holiday, he established it every May 30th and it stayed that way for nearly 100 years.
However, Congress passed a law in 1971 to move Memorial Day to the last Monday in May so that it would always be a long weekend.

5. Waterloo’s birthday is Memorial Day
The town of Waterloo, in New York state, is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day. It is said that in 1865 the pharmacist Henry C. Wells proposed organizing a memorial in Waterloo for veterans who had died in the Civil War. The following year, John B. Murray took up the idea and inspired veterans to get involved.
This year the residents of Waterloo went to the cemeteries of the region to decorate the monuments, when all the flags were flown at half-mast. The following year the activity was repeated and soon it became a tradition that spread throughout the country.
