Upon its theatrical release, John Wick 4 surpassed the previous installments with a worldwide box office record of $1 billion.
The third film managed to gross a total of 327.7 million and its predecessors (with 171.5 and 87.8 million each) were located below this figure. The action franchise’s final chapter brought Keanu Reeves’ era as Hitman to a close to critical acclaim, and now that success has been proven in worldwide box office numbers as well.
“This milestone is a testament to the incredible work of Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, as well as Basil Ivanic and Erica Lee, who have set out to better themselves with each successive film in this franchise. “We couldn’t be more grateful to moviegoers around the world for leading us to this incredible achievement,” Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement obtained by Deadline.
In addition to Reeves in the lead, the cast of the fourth installment includes Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamir Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Swayamyama, Scott Adkins and Ian McShane. The feature film was directed by Chad Stahelski, a renowned stuntman who made his debut as a filmmaker with this film saga. Shay Hatton and Michael Finch were in charge of the script, which in turn is based on characters created by Derek Kolstad.
In this new adventure of John Wick, the hero seeks his freedom at all costs. To do so, he must assassinate the Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Skarsgård), the current leader of the Supreme Order, who has issued a death sentence against him after surviving previous attacks. John must find allies and be very careful in his strategy to face this ruthless foe.
“You hope that people like what you do, that people like what you’re a part of. In my case, I love John Wick, and I think Chapter Four is going to be something new in this franchise.” Very big, something very special,” Keanu Reeves said in an interview with Infobay that was published last March. “We shot in Berlin and Paris during the COVID pandemic, but the most difficult thing was recovering from so many action sequences and fight scenes, fighting and doing it day after day. […] That was probably the most challenging part.”
Reeves is one of the most recognizable stars in Hollywood, both for his stellar performances on camera and his quality as a person. The appearance of the American actor reinforced the good commercial reception of the film series since its debut in 2014. The action plot automatically hooked the public and led Lionsgate to develop three more productions. the rest is history.
