Depp-Beck album: What to know
In reference to that last post about Depp and English guitarist Jeff Beck taking the stage together in those surprisingly headline-grabbing shows, their album of main covers is soon to be released.
A 13-track album titled “18” will be released on July 15. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor performed with Beck at several UK venues over the past two weeks.
“It’s almost like you’ve gone through a record store and jumped from one genre to another,” Beck said, adding that he first began working on the album at Depp’s home in France. .
“There’s a pair of Motown covers in there, there’s some Beach Boy covers… that sounds great for a home recording.” Depp and Beck have recorded music for the album since 2019, which also features two original songs from Depp, who has his own band, Hollywood Vampires. One song is about actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr.
“We slowly created songs that we liked. We didn’t really create any designs,” Beck said.
“He … has a very distinctive[voice]and he finds music and hopefully I’ve enabled him to open up some songs that he might not have been interested in otherwise.”
Following the successful verdict earlier this month, Depp said the jury gave him his life back.
Beck said: “I hope I’ve given him some kind of understanding and closeness and a little bit of help to keep the jokes going and the funny stuff going.”
Beck was speaking on the sidelines of a Blue Plaque event in London’s Hard Rock Hotel in honor of late guitarist Jimi Hendrix. The building was formerly the Cumberland Hotel, where Hendrix often stayed before his 1970 death.
“It was one of the biggest blanks left in rock ‘n’ roll,” Beck said.
