Jonah Goldberg: What do inflation and critical race theory have in common? More than you think

Jonah Goldberg

How is inflation similar to a critical theory of race?

Many voters find it difficult to explain how a particular option works, but they know they don’t like it when they see it.

Obviously, this is essentially a silly comparison. First, some voters do like Critical Race Theory (CRT), while no one likes to pay higher prices. But politically, the comparison is relevant for two reasons.

First, the country tends to blame the ruling party for what it does not like, even if it is not entirely clear that the ruling party is responsible for this.

The recent battles for the CRT in the Virginia election – whatever you think of it – had nothing to do with Joe Biden or Congress. The same is mostly true for other hot issues, such as “refusal of the police” or transgender toilets. But the National Democrats are blamed for them. O’Neill’s advice: “All politics is local” has been replaced by nationalized politics.

A new ABC-Washington Post poll found Republicans to lead registered voters with 10 points, the biggest advantage in the poll’s 40-year history. The main factor of voter dissatisfaction is the economy in general and inflation in particular, which reached a 30-year high in October and is practically not going to decline anytime soon.

Inflation is a terrible problem in and of itself, but it is excruciating for politicians in power because it affects everyone on a daily basis, especially those living paycheck to paycheck, and feeds an even greater psychological fear that the situation is out of control. Among political issues, he is almost uniquely immune to gay talk and political slogans. Politicians may advise voters not to believe their false eyes about the scale of the scandal, but one cannot tell people that they are not actually paying higher prices for their children’s milk, gas, or shoes. Everyone is a connoisseur of their wallet.
