Judd Apatow was promoting his documentary on the late comedian George Carlin on Monday when “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert gave the filmmaker a chuckle he couldn’t resist. (See video below.)
Colbert recently interviewed Mark Esper, the former Secretary of Defense under Donald Trump. Esper was enjoying his new book in which he revealed that Trump wanted to fire missiles at Mexico, shoot protesters in the legs against police brutality, and court military officers for criticizing the former president’s actions. Wanted to reactivate for Marshall.
“You watching that interview right now?” Colbert asked Apatow.
“I don’t think George Carlin would like Mark Arizona,” said the director of The King of Staten Island.
“Why not?” Colbert asked.
“Because the whole idea of Carlin was that people with money manipulate the whole system,” Apatow replied. “So if anyone knows Trump is a lunatic, and you’d think the day he’s fired, that’s the day to go, ‘Hey, he wanted to shoot all the George Floyd protesters in the foot. But he waits a year to write a book and he earns money. And I think that was the whole point of George Carlin, who he just thought, they’re not looking for you.
It should be noted that Colbert told Esper about putting up book profits before notifying the public, but Esper responded that if he had disclosed Trump’s outside views, he would have been fired on the spot and was unable to stop them. (He was eventually canned just days after the 2020 election.)
William Barr, John Bolton and Stephanie Grisham are also among former Trump administration officials who wrote the tell-all. Critics say they could have done better by waiting for their books to be redeemed before whistling, The Washington Post noted.
