Judge and Diaz stand out on list of 131 free agents

HOUSTON ( Associated Press) – Aaron Judge, Edwin Diaz, Tree Turner, Dansby Swanson and Xander Bogarts were among 131 players who became free agents on Sunday, just hours after the Major League Baseball final. ,

Justin Verlander, Jacob deGrom and Carlos Rodone should join him in the coming days as they are among 56 players who have options that should be defined in the five-day period after the World Series. All three pitchers are expected to narrow down their options in the form of shortstop Carlos Correa and first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Clayton Kershaw, Wilson Contreras, Brandon Nimmo, Kenley Jensen, Nathan Iovaldi, Josh Bell and Andrew Benintendi also became free agents on Sunday.

Some players, like Mets pitcher Chris Bassit, have mutual option contracts that will have to be worked out. Up to 55 players can enter free agency, based on option decisions.

Players will be able to start contract negotiations from Friday.

The judge turned down an offer from the New York Yankees in April for $213 million from 2023-29. The outfielder responded with an American league-record 62 home runs, tied for the major league lead with 131 RBIs and finished second in his circuit with an average of .311.

Teams have until Thursday to submit qualifying offers worth $19.65 million to their former players who have become free agents.

A free agent can receive a qualifying offer only if he has been with the same club since the first day of the season and has never received a qualifying offer before. The player has until 20 November to accept it.

Instead of being declared free agents, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina – veterans of the St. Louis Cardinals – entered voluntary retirement lists.

Meanwhile, Washington left-handed reliever Sean Doolittle was the first free agent to reach a deal, agreeing to a minor league deal and staying with the Nationals.
