MEXICO CITY ( Associated Press) – A state judge was shot and killed Sunday in an attack as he stepped out of his home in the central state of Zacatecas, an area that has seen violence escalated in recent months due to disputes Is. between two drug cartels.
Judge Roberto Elias Martínez’s death was announced by Zacatecas Judiciary President Magistrate, Arturo Nahle García, who said on his Twitter account that the violent incident “humours us and joins us in the desperate demand for peace in Zacatecas.”
Martinez was shot inside a car on Saturday after leaving his home in the municipality of Guadalupe de Zacatecas. Local media reported that the judge was shot several times, one of them in the head, and was admitted to a health center, where he died.
Nahle Garcia said she was not aware that the judge had received any threats, and so far the motive for the attack is unknown.
The judge’s assassination comes days after the death of General José Urzua Padilla, the coordinator of the National Guard in Zacatecas, who died on 24 November during an operation against organized crime in which army and police forces participated.
Dozens of killings of civilians and police have occurred in Zacatecas in recent months, where the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación cartels are engaged in confrontation. The federal government has sent hundreds of Army and National Guard troops to deal with the violence in that area.
