Judge dismisses NRA lawsuit accusing New York attorney general of ‘witch hunt’

A judge on Friday dismissed a counterclaim by the National Rifle Association that the group hoped to use to dismiss a civil suit by the New York attorney general.

The NRA sought damages of funds and an end to the civil lawsuit by state Attorney General Letitia James—who has been investigating the gun group’s shady business practices since 2020—by arguing that the lawsuit against the NRA was political. was inspired.

In a 14-page ruling, Justice Joel Cohen of the state’s Supreme Court denied the NRA’s claim.

“The attorney general’s investigation into these undeniably serious cases was nothing more than a politically motivated – and unconstitutional – witch hunt,” Cohen wrote in his ruling, “not supported only by the record.”

James’ investigation into the not-for-profit Gun Group revealed that top players, including chief executive Wayne LaPierre, were involved in “years of illegal self-dealing,” which included buying luxury homes and spending as high as half a million dollars on the NRA. was. – Eliminate menswear and foreign trips.

Powell wrote in “Inside the NRA,” a book about the gun group, that “Wayne was selling the program to our members, raising money from them, claiming that we were protecting children’s schools. ” “It was another example of witchcraft behind the scenes – lots of inflammatory rhetoric and fireworks and noise, but very little effective action on combating gun violence.”

Although Cohen rejected James’ bid to dissolve the NRA in March, he noted in his Friday ruling that the NRA is still on the hook for mismanagement of funds, and the group acknowledged in its court filing. that it required “curricular reform.”

Cohen wrote, “The NRA insists that the Attorney General’s investigation was ‘false’ and ‘excuse’ because he ‘made a course correction to improve its compliance controls and internal governance’.” “In doing so, the NRA acknowledged that a ‘curricular correction’ was needed, undermining its claim that the attorney general’s concerns were completely fabricated. The NRA also ignores that ‘course correction’ The ‘reform’ came, in part, as a response to the threat of the Attorney General’s investigation.”

James applauds judge’s decision on twitter,

“Once again, a court has rejected the NRA’s efforts to quash our case of fraud and abuse against the NRA,” he tweeted. “We will continue our efforts to hold the NRA accountable because no one is above the law.”
