Justin Trudeau gathered at Elizabeth II’s Ardent Chapel

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stands in front of the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II at the Ardent Chapel in London on Saturday, two days before the official funeral. He is due to meet with King Charles III later today.

Trudeau arrived in London on Friday as part of a Canadian delegation that also includes Governor General Mary Simon, four former prime ministers and three national Indigenous leaders.

The Prime Minister visited the state at Westminster Hall around noon local time. Quietly, he looked for a few seconds at the queen’s coffin, which was from the Rustom reserved for foreign delegations. Mr Trudeau was accompanied by his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau.

Minutes later he was on his way to Lancaster House to sign a book of condolence for the Queen, who had died a week earlier at the age of 96.

In the middle of the afternoon local time, Mr Trudeau will meet with the new King, Charles III, at Buckingham Palace.

Last week, in Ottawa, following the announcement of the new sovereign’s accession to the throne, Mr Trudeau stressed in a press release that “Canada has a longstanding relationship and close friendship with His Majesty King Charles III”.

“We are confident that his deep commitment to education, the environment and youth empowerment will provide a solid foundation on which he will build as he continues to work for the betterment of the Commonwealth and its people,” the Prime Minister said.

Thousands of people queued up to see the Queen’s coffin on Saturday in London. Officials have warned that people standing in line can wait for 24 hours.

Streets around the Palace of Westminster were sealed with metal fences on Friday, and a large contingent of police from across Britain is already leading crowds to pay tribute to the Queen.

Security levels have also been beefed up in anticipation of Monday’s funeral. Hundreds of thousands of “ordinary citizens” are also expected to attend the funeral as close as possible, in addition to dozens of other world leaders, including US President Joe Biden.
