Kane’s double helps Tottenham thrash Crystal Palace 4-0

With two classic goals for a striker, Harry Kane showed he has had no long-term effects of his World Cup disappointment with England.

He has scored three goals in three Premier League games with Tottenham since returning from Qatar following Wednesday’s 4-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Kane bore the brunt of missing a late penalty in England’s 2–1 defeat to France in the quarter-finals on 10 December.

Back for Tottenham he scored on the opening day of the league match in a 2–2 draw with Brentford and added two more against Palace – a header and a low shot.

It was a reminder of Kane’s scoring opportunism, not that it was necessary. It also brought relief to coach Antonio Conte, who was pessimistic about the team’s chances of reaching the top four after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

The win moved Tottenham into fifth place, five points clear of Liverpool, who are sixth and two behind Newcastle and Manchester United in third and fourth respectively. United are one game short.

Matt Doherty and Son Heung-min scored all the goals in the space of 24 minutes in the extra half at Selhurst Park.

On the other side of the table, Southampton are last by two points after losing 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, who are just outside the relegation zone.

Wolverhampton finished last after drawing 1–1 with Villa, while Leeds drew 2–2 with West Ham, played hours after co-chairman David Gould’s death was announced.
