Kansas votes for abortion rights

Status: 08/03/2022 08:27

Kansas voters voted in favor of abortion rights in a referendum. Republicans wanted to limit abortion, but failed significantly.

The people of Kansas have decided: After nearly all votes are counted, a good 60 percent vote for abortion protection in the state constitution. 39 percent voted against it. If voters had voted against it, the Kansas government would have been able to restrict abortion rights.

While the result is preliminary, it can be seen as a resounding victory for pro-choice advocates in a very conservative state. Already polling had predicted a very tight outcome.

coordinate with signal effect

The referendum in Kansas is the first of its kind since the US Supreme Court in the United States in June overturned the then constitutionally protected abortion. Since then it has been left to the states to decide on the right of abortion.

So the referendum is sending a sure signal. In many Republican-ruled states, officials are drafting stricter abortion laws. In other states such as California and Kentucky, citizens will vote on the issue in November, coinciding with midterm congressional elections.

conservative majority

Abortion is currently legal in Kansas until about 22 weeks. A Supreme Court ruling in the state, which has nearly three million residents, reaffirmed this again in 2019. The state, which is governed by a conservative majority, is a haven for pregnant women from nearby states such as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, which now have abortions banned with a few exceptions.

Primarily rural Kansas is considered a conservative state. Republican Donald Trump got 56 percent of the vote in the 2020 presidential election. 29 of Kansas’ 40 senators and 86 of the 125 members of the House of Representatives are Republicans. However, the governor is Democrat Laura Kelly.

american president happy

An initial reaction came soon after US President Joe Biden announced the results of the vote via Twitter: it was a significant victory for Kansas, but also for any American who believes that women should be allowed to participate in government intervention meetings.
