A Florida family found a message in a bottle on the beach and tracked down the man who dumped it in the ocean 37 years ago.

Katie and Annie Carmax said they were walking with their two young daughters along the coast in Sebastian on Nov. 13 when they met a pair of teachers participating in the cleanup effort after Hurricane Nicole.

The teachers give the family their most unusual find: a message in a bottle.

“We feel really special because we met two amazing teachers who were picking up trash after the storm,” Katie Carmax told WLKY-TV.

The Carmeaux family told their story on TikTok when they tried to find the letter’s author, Troy Heller, who included an address and phone number in Louisville, Kentucky, in his note.

The family used Heller’s previous contact information to locate him online and found a man with the same name who lived in Mount Washington, Kentucky.

Heller said she initially ignored a call from an unknown number in Florida, but soon received a text that caught her attention. “I remembered writing it as soon as I saw it,” he said.

Heller said He was only 10 years old when he threw an old glass Pepsi bottle into the Atlantic Ocean During a visit to Vero Beach, Florida in 1985.

The bottle only traveled a few miles from where it originally entered the water, but Heller said she was surprised to find that it survived nearly four decades.

“I’m surprised it didn’t break,” he said.

The Carrmaxes sent the letter to Heller, who framed it next to a photograph a family member had taken in 1985 of the bottle being thrown into the ocean.

“It’s something you never thought of,” he said. “I thought I’d throw it in the ocean and see where it went, you know? It’s amazing they finally found their way back.”
