CHICAGO ( Associated Press) – Clayton Kershaw dominated in seven innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the struggling Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the split doubleheader opener on Saturday.
Freddie Freeman doubled three times and scored twice, helping the NL West leaders win for the 16th time in 21 games. Austin Barnes hit home and scored three runs.
Kershav (4-0) conceded five hits, hit two and went for one. The three-time Cy Young Award winner returned from a hard-luck loss to Detroit in which he surpassed Hall of Famer Don Sutton as the Dodgers’ career strikeout leader.
Kershaw combined with two relievers on the third shutout of the Los Angeles season. Twinbill was part of the makeup from Friday’s rain.
Barnes hit a single drive against Drew Smiley in the fourth and added a two-run single in the eighth. Justin Turner scored two runs with a double in the fifth, making it 4–0 and the Dodgers continued to come out of a two-game sweep of San Francisco, in which they beat their rivals 12–2.
The Cubs were hurt for their eighth loss in 10 games from sloppy play on the field and at base. He was dropped for the first time since a 10–0 loss by Milwaukee on August 11, 2021.
Smiley (1-3) came back from the mourning list and played 4 1/3 innings. The left-hander allowed two earned runs and six hits.
After walking Chicago’s Siya Suzuki in the first innings, Kershaw handed the first catch. Nico Horner was tagged in the second after jogging one infield single to the other, apparently thinking that shortstop Tree Turner had thrown the ball out of play after throwing wildly on his single.
