Pyongyang: The wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made her first public appearance a year later. There has been speculation for some time about her absence that she has got corona virus or that she is not coming out due to a possible pregnancy.
30-year-old Ri Sol-joo attended a concert to commemorate the birthday of her father and predecessor Kim Jong-il. Ri was last seen in January 2020 on a schedule of the Lunar New Year holiday.
Ri Sol’s absence had raised questions over her health as to whether she was in solitude to avoid any risk of corona virus infection or could become pregnant. The couple currently has three children.
Countries have been under quarantine since they closed their borders in January last year to try to protect themselves from a worldwide epidemic that erupted in January.
Kim has repeatedly stressed that there are no Corona virus cases in the country, although outside experts suspect them.
Wednesday’s report and photos show South Korea’s National Intelligence Service telling lawmakers that Ri is with children and was avoiding public activity due to the Corona virus epidemic.
Prior to her long absence, Ri joined her husband on several “field guidance trips” and meetings with foreign leaders including South President Moon Jae-in and China’s Xi Jinping.
Due to Kovid, no foreign leaders traveled to the North last year, nor did Kim take any trips that would require his wife’s presence.
Ree is believed to have been a former star singer in her early 30s and hit public attention in 2012.
She is considered one of the most high-profile women in the isolated, deeply patriarchal nation along with husband’s sister and close mentor Kim Yo-jong.
