Klinsmann regrets rift between Reyna and Berhalter

BERLIN ( Associated Press) — Former United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann said the public spat between current coach Greg Berhalter and the family of youth soccer player Geo Reyna “obviously doesn’t look good.”

Klinsmann, who managed the national team from 2011 to 2016, said on Wednesday that problems between Berhalter and Reyna may have affected the team’s performance during the recent World Cup in Qatar.

The United States advanced to the round of 16, where they were eliminated 3–1 by the Netherlands.

“They have done well,” Klinsmann said of the picks during a conference call with reporters. “But they weren’t able to go a step further and make things happen.”

Berhalter only used Reyna for 53 minutes during the tournament. On 6 December, speaking at a forum, the coach said that he was going to send a footballer back home because he was not trying hard enough.

It was later revealed that the remark was in reference to Reyna, the son of former US captain Claudio Reyna.

The Reyna family responded by notifying the United States Soccer Federation that Berhalter had dumped his then-girlfriend, whom he later married, in 1991.

This led the Federation to hand over an investigation to an outside law firm. The body also reviewed the personnel of the team and their performance during the four-year World Cup cycle.

Gio Reyna, who plays for Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, said he was “devastated” ahead of the tournament when Berhalter informed him that his role in Qatar would be very limited.

Klinsmann commented that it was “sad” to see the stories unfold after the World Cup, as the team needed full concentration “for something to happen”, but it did not.

“There were issues and problems, and they weren’t able to resolve them during the tournament,” said Klinsmann, who insisted that the United States should be looking for a semifinal spot at the World Cup.

“That’s the dream and the goal. And I think we’re still a little bit away from that,” said Klinsmann, who won the World Cup with Germany in 1990 as a player.

As coach of the German national team, he was ranked third in 2006.
