Kraft has high hopes for Mac Jones to jump to Year 2 with Patriots

When it comes to the recent performances of the Patriots, the owner robert kraft Expressing his disappointment. And that’s what he’s doing when it comes to his hopes for quarterback mac jones,

Kraft spoke to Jeff Howe of The Athletic for a new feature story centered around Jones, whom everyone in the organization and every fan in New England hopes will make a big move in its second season. Jones threw 22 touchdown passes as a rookie, and posted a 92.5 passer rating, ranking 15th in the NFL.

“This year will be very telling,” Kraft told Howe of Jones and the 2022 Patriots. “For something as new as this, as established, I think he was beaten up pretty badly, and he kept coming back and getting up and doing some really great things. The way he handles himself, he took some real beatings and jumps. He’s developed good relationships with a whole cadre of recipients. I’m very happy with what I saw. But it’s a big year, second year. “

Much of the focus on the Patriots’ 2022 off-season has been about their relative passivity in free agency and the major additions surrounding the AFC on wide receivers. Kraft is echoing Bill Belichick’s recent sentiment that the team instead expects major improvements from those who disappointed in 2021 (Jonnu Smith, Nelson Agholor), and another move for players who do well. fit (Kendrick Bourne, Hunter Henry).

But despite concerns that the Patriots may be lagging behind in the talent surrounding their quarterback, the more important question is what direction Jones’ career is headed in year 2. On paper, could he approach the regular season performance of the Bengals. who bur In its season of sophistication? Burrow threw for 4,611 yards, 34 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, ending with a 108.3 passer rating, the second best in the league behind Aaron Rodgers.

Asking Jones to give him a top-2 passer rating sounds like a big question. But could he break into the top-10? Patrick Mahomes Ranked 10th in 2021 with a rating of 98.5. This would be an improvement of about 6.5 percent for Jones from his rookie year. This Patriots roster probably needs a little more than that.

Still, there are factors outside of Jones’ control that could improve QB production himself and get more points on the board. The Patriots played conservatively in the passing game for much of 2021 as they brought Jones along, particularly in the red zone. With Josh McDaniels gone and Belichick likely to play a bigger role in coordinating the offense, it won’t be surprising to see the Pats take a more aggressive aerial approach now that Jones has had a year.

If Jones can start making more plays through the air while still maintaining solid decision-making, his numbers will certainly improve. But still, will it lead to more victories? Jones’ performance under pressure, against both pass-rushers and high-leveraged positions, will ultimately define him, as it does any quarterback.

And as Kraft thinks it is, it could even define the Patriots’ 2022 season.
