PALMA, Spain ( Associated Press) — Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Mallorca Championships on Wednesday with an abdominal injury, saying he doesn’t want to escalate the problem ahead of Wimbledon.
The 45th-ranked Australian made the announcement ahead of his round-of-16 match against Roberto Bautista Agut.
“I have been playing a lot of great matches lately and unfortunately I woke up with a pain in my stomach. I immediately went to the tournament doctor and he advised that I will not play tonight,” Kyrgios said. “I really value the Mallorca championship but I will follow his advice as I will not risk Wimbledon next week want to put.”
Kyrgios needed more than two hours to beat Laslo Jere 5-7, 7-6(1), 7-6(1) in the previous round of the grass-court tournament to prepare for Wimbledon.
Along with top-ranked Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Australian was one of the biggest attractions in Mallorca.
Tsitsipas began Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 40th-ranked Ilya Ivashka.
“I felt that after my first serve, I was able to really go behind the ball and take the right position,” Tsitsipas said. “I think it was very difficult for the opponent to be able to adjust to it. I was doing it very well. I was very dedicated to it. It was really good for me from start to finish.”
Sixth-ranked Tsitsipas will face American Marcos Giron, who defeated compatriot Mackenzie McDonald 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Medvedev will debut against Aslan Karatsev on Wednesday.
