Latest news: The last British troops begin to arrive from Afghanistan

Associated Press Report

LONDON-After a two-week evacuation operation in the UK, military planes carrying British troops and diplomats from Kabul are landing at an air base in the UK.

Hours after the government announced that all British personnel had left Kabul, the British Ambassador to Afghanistan Laurie Bristow was one of the people who arrived at RAF Brize Norton in northwest London on Sunday. one.

The UK stated that more than 15,000 British citizens and vulnerable Afghans have been evacuated in the past two weeks, but as many as 1,100 Afghans who have the right to come to the UK are still left behind.

Lieutenant General Ben Kee, who was in charge of the British operation, said: “We did our best.”

In a video message, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson praised this “enormous” effort, calling it “a mission different from anything we have seen in our lifetime.”

But he faced strong criticism for failing to bring back to safety all the Afghans who helped the British army during the 20-year deployment in Afghanistan that began after 9/11.

Johnson admitted that the United Kingdom “would not want to leave in this way,” but he said “we must admit that we came in with the United States to defend and support the United States, and that the U.S. military fought most of the battle.”

Here is what is happening:

Tirana, Albania-Two more planes brought Afghans who were afraid of the Taliban to Albania, bringing the total number of evacuees to 457.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Sunday that the two planes landed at dawn, carrying 154 and 28 Afghans, respectively. Most of them will be temporarily placed on a student campus in the capital Tirana, while others will be taken directly to the hotel.

Albania’s goal is to place all evacuees in hotels rather than camps, so that they can feel normal.
