MIAMI (AP) – Brian Landry’s family attorney said on Tuesday that he fatally shot himself in the head.

Landry has been wanted for over a month as investigators sought evidence of the murder of his girlfriend Gabby Petito during their cross-country van ride together.

Attorney Steve Bertolino said in a statement that Laundry’s parents were informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and death was a suicide.

“Chris and Roberta still mourn the loss of their son and hope that these discoveries will bring peace to both families,” Bertolino said.

Landry’s remains, found at the Florida Wildlife Sanctuary, were identified through dental records last month.

The discovery of the remains completed a massive federal, state and local law enforcement search that began shortly after Laundry disappeared on September 14, two weeks after the 23-year-old returned alone to his parents’ home in North Port, Florida.

However, the investigation into Petito’s murder has not yet been completed. But only Landry was identified by law enforcement officials as a person interested in this case.

The Petito family reported her missing on September 11, launching a search that attracted global media attention and, in the case of the laundry, mainly focused on the Carlton Conservation Reserve next to the laundry house. This densely forested and swampy area is home to alligators, coyotes, lynxes, snakes and many other creatures.
