Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson has accused Yankees slugger Josh Donaldson of making racist remarks during Saturday’s game and Major League Baseball is looking into the incident.
Anderson, one of the game’s leading black voices, said that Donaldson asked her, “What’s going on, Jackie?” – A reference to Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947.
“I don’t think it was called for,” Anderson said after New York’s 7-5 win at Yankee Stadium.
Donaldson is white and said he used Robinson’s name, but didn’t mean it to be offensive.
Donaldson said he “joked” with All-Star shortstop in the past using the same reference and referred to a 2019 interview in which Anderson told Sports Illustrated: “I feel like the Jackie Robinson of today … , and I feel like I’m getting to the point where I need to change the game.”
“I don’t mean any words trying to be racist by any fact of the matter,” Donaldson said.
Donaldson and Anderson have scrapped twice in the past week.
The White Sox and Yankees are about to see each other for the last time in the regular season with a doubleheader.

Red Sox right Nathan Iovaldi (1-2, 4.32 ERA) looks to rebound from dropping a barrage of longballs as he begins the four-match series finale against the Mariners at Fenway Park.
Hard-thrower Iovaldi became just the third pitcher in MLB history to be tagged for five homers in an innings during a loss to Houston last Tuesday, surpassing Toronto’s Chase Anderson (September 17, 2020, vs Yankees) and Milwaukee’s Joins Michael Blazek (July 28, 2017, vs National).
Right-hander Logan Gilbert (4-2, 2.40) is set to leave for Seattle. He was AL Pitcher of the Month in April, starting with a 3-0 0.40 ERA in four.
The Mariners also signed four-time All-Star outfielder Justin Upton on Saturday. Bitten by the Angels ahead of Opening Day, 34-year-old Upton will report to extended spring training in Peoria, Arizona.

Manny Machado and the rising San Diego Padres head for a three-game sweep at NL West rival San Francisco.
Award-winning rookie Mackenzie Gore (2-1, 2.17 ERA) made his sixth major league debut for the Padres and his first since May 9. He played three scoreless innings of relief in his last outing in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Legendary left-hander Alex Wood (3-2, 3.93) is 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA in 17 appearances, including 11 starts against San Diego.
The Padres have won three in a row and five out of six. Defending division champion San Francisco has dropped three in a row after winning eight out of 10.
The series opener turned heated Friday night, when fans threw at least a baseball and a beer bottle on the field, leaving fielder Jurikson Proffer in the Padres’ direction. After the game, he called the crowd at Giants games “the worst in the league”.

Paul Goldschmid brings up a 14-game hitting streak and 28-game on-base streak in St. Louis’ early start in Pittsburgh. Slugger scored 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 5-4.
The three-match series finale will begin at 11:35 a.m. to accommodate NBC’s streaming service Peacock. It would be the first game to be played in Pittsburgh since the Pirates hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 4, 1987 at Three Rivers Stadium at 10:05 a.m.
Cardinals designated hitter Albert Pujols has played 2,992 career games. With his next one, he would take Willie Mays to ninth place in major league history.
