Learn the differences between mezcal and tequila

10:38 AM

Mezcal is the oldest and oldest liquor in Mexico, above tequila itself, with which many identify the culture of that region.

There are many differences between the two, from the fact that they come from different countries, and the distillations and fermentations are different.

Additionally, everything is served and consumed individually.

Luiz Fernando Valentia, who is Turkish, and a spokesman for Dislicors, says that mezcal comes from leaves like espadín and tobalá, while tequila is distilled from the agave pine.

“Tequila is generally produced in five regions of Mexico, including the most famous Jalisco and Guadalajara, and mezcal from Oaxaca,” says El Turco.

The method of obtaining it, says the spokesperson for Dislicores, varies a lot, while tequila is made in steam ovens, mezcal is made underground, so it has smoky or earthy notes.

Mezcal appears to be more ancient and traditional, while tequila is more commercial.

How are they caught?

Commercially, both liquors differ because they have mezcal inside, a trend that Turkey describes as attracting tourists because they don’t have great mezcal.

In Colombia, these liquids with worms (which are in penca) cannot be distributed due to Invima and ICA regulations, while they are popular in Mexico.

Mezcal is taken for the weather, in clay or earthenware vessels and nothing is added (no lemon). In some cases, they put salt, from the same penca worms or from cicadas (cicadas)”, explains the spokesperson for Dislicores.

On its part, tequila contains salt and lemon. Both are short drinks (shots) to be sipped together.

Mezcal Boom

Mezcal liquor has become very popular and more commercialized in recent years, so much so that Maluma, an urban artist from Medellín, launched his own brand last year.

“Once I met the team behind the brand in Mexico, after I made several visits to the Agave fields in Oaxaca, and seeing the way it was made, I was sure that I would become a partner and I wanted to invest my money in this project. for several reasons. Among them is that, in everything we do, I try to share my discoveries with the whole world and the people around me. I am very happy to present Contraluz in Colombia”, said Maluma at the launch.

Mexico exports its mezcals to 68 countries on five continents. The main importers are the United States, Spain, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Australia and Italy. Colombia appears on that list.

In Colombia, the most sold 400 Conejos are distributed by Dislicores, while Diageo is available in the Union market for Mezcal.
