LOS ANGELES (NWN) – LeBron James had 33 points, nine assists and no clash with Isaiah Stewart in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 110-106 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday night.
Russell Westbrook had 25 points and nine assists, and Anthony Davis added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers. They returned to .500 with their second win over Detroit in eight days.
Los Angeles once again failed to get away from a struggling opponent, but still beat the Pistons for the fifth time in a row at the Staples Center.
Stewart was repeatedly and enthusiastically booed by the Lakers crowd, but he had no significant interactions with James after both players were ejected for an ugly brawl from the teams meeting in Detroit a week earlier.
James was assessed a flagrant-2 foul and was kicked out when he hit Stewart in the face while he was jockeying for a rebounding position. An enraged Stewart later repeatedly attempted to accuse James, leading to his own disapproval. James served a one-game suspension and Stewart received a two-game ban.
Stewart kept stirring the pot on Friday by saying he didn’t think James’ shock was accidental, as James claims it was. Stewart, 20, is 3 1/2 years older than James’ eldest son, Bronie.
Jeremy Grant scored 32 points and number 1 pick Cade Cunningham had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the Pistons’ sixth straight loss. Detroit chased down an 11-point loss to the Clippers at Staples Center on Friday, but fell short again, being more competitive against another Los Angeles team.
Stewart had five points and six rebounds in 27 minutes in the rematch.
The Lakers went 16-0 up in the third quarter to take a 19-point lead, their most consecutive score this season. But Los Angeles has rarely sustained a significant stretch of a good game this season, and the Pistons were 97–91, with 5:48 13–2 left.
Grant’s free throw took the lead to 108-104 with 16.7 seconds remaining, but the Lakers held on.
