Lewis’ grand slam helps Twins beat Guardians

MINNEAPOLIS ( Associated Press) — Royce Lewis hit a grand slam, the first home run of his major league career, that capped a nine-run rally in the fifth inning, as the Minnesota Twins beat the Minnesota Twins 12-8 on Friday. Cleveland Guardians decimated by COVID.

Byron Buxton, as well as Dominicans Jorge Polanco and Gary Sánchez added homers to Minnesota’s cause. The ruthless offense came after the Twins had been shut out in two of three games against Houston.

The Guardians were playing for the first time since their Wednesday game, a visit to the Chicago White Sox, was postponed. It was the first postponement caused by a coronavirus outbreak in the majors this season.

Pitching coach Carl Willis was tasked with leading the team in place of manager Terry Francona, who entered major league health protocols this week.

First base coach Sandy Alomar, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh, bench coach DeMarlo Hale, pitching coach Joe Torres and hitting analyst Justin Toole are also sidelined by the outbreak.

Hours before the game, outfielder Josh Naylor was also listed for COVID-19.

Buxton and Polanco homered off Aaron Civale.

Griffin Jax (3-0) got the win in relief, despite allowing four runs and as many hits in 2 2/3 innings, during which he gave up three walks.

For the Guardians, the Dominicans José Ramírez 5-2 with a run scored and two produced, Amed Rosario 5-2 with a run scored and an RBI, Franmil Reyes 4-1. The Venezuelan Andrés Giménez 4-1 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Colombian Óscar Mercado 5-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

For the Twins, the Venezuelan Luis Arráez 3-0. The Dominicans Polanco 4-1 with two runs scored and one RBI, Sánchez 5-2 with one run scored and three RBIs. Colombian Gio Urshela 4-1 with a run scored.
