Football players in the Spanish championship, the F League, have ended the strike that prevented the competition’s first match from being played last weekend by improving their salaries, unions and employers reported on Thursday.
So the season officially begins this Friday with the game between Valencia and Real Madrid, a team in which the Colombian Linda Caicedo plays.
“After a new and long day of negotiations (…), League F and the unions have reached an agreement on the minimum wage, which allows the strike to be called,” said a statement from the league early on Thursday morning.
“What is transmitted today from the union side is the agreement on the minimum wage, the main cause of the strike, accepted by the players in the exercise of their responsibility towards the fans and this sport,” they explained on their side of the unions.
The players launched the strike for the first two days of the championship (September 8-10 and September 15-17), mainly to achieve salary improvements, but also for other demands.
The employers agreed to increase the minimum salary, previously set at 16,000 euros (US$17,000 per year), to 21,000 euros (US$22,500 per year) in the current season and then to 22,500 euros (US$24,100) in 2024/25. and 23,500 euros (US$25,500). in 2025/26.
The unions initially demanded that the minimum salary this season be increased to 23,000 euros per year, which even meant that the players would earn less than the main referees.
“This step is the beginning and only part of the agreement; Now is the time to work on such important points as maternity, harassment protocol and other aspects that are “equally important for the correct development of the activities of our football players,” the unions added.
The clash between the F League and the players came amid the controversy sparked by the now-resigned Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss on player Jenni Hermoso after the final of the Women’s World Cup, the Spain won.
Rubiales initially refused to resign his post, claiming the kiss was “consensual”, but resigned on Sunday amid a wave of criticism both in Spain and internationally and a criminal investigation against him in court.
