Late-night talk shows on American television are back, with their sketches and monologues, after the writers’ union, on Tuesday, September 26, ended a 148-day strike.
Most film and television production in the United States was paralyzed after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in May, an action that was followed in July by an actors’ strike. Their main demands are an economic development contract that protects them from the arrival of artificial intelligence in the sector.
WHAT TALK-SHOWS COME BACK AFTER THE US WRITERS’ STRIKE?
Host Bill Maher was the first to return. On Friday, September 29, he returned to the screens of his program “Real Time”, through the HBO signal; and on Sunday it’s John Oliver’s turn on Last Week Tonight. In the first week of October they will do the same, the programs The Tonight Show, The Late Show, Late Night, the hosts announced on Wednesday, September 27, at noon.
Hosts Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver collaborate on a popular podcast called Strike Force Five, named for their personal text message chain and whose profits go to the incredible writers. On Wednesday they announced on Instagram that it was “mission accomplished.”
Plans for some late-night shows are not entirely clear, for example Saturday Night Live and Comedy Central’s Daily Show, both of which have guest hosts.
