Liverpool top Watford 2-0, keep heat at City in title race

LIVERPOOL, England ( Associated Press) – Liverpool retained the heat on Manchester City in the Premier League title race by beating relegation-threatened Watford 2-0 on Saturday thanks to Diogo Jota’s 20th goal of the season in all competitions and Fabinho’s late penalty kick .

Jota shot over the face of the six-meter box and in the 22nd minute at Anfield looked into a header from a right-wing cross by Joe Gomez.

Jota also scored the penalty for the second goal, when he was bundled by Juraj Kucka on a corner. Fabinho, a substitute in the second half, hid the spot kick in the 89th with the usual penalty goal – Mohamed Salah – already kicked off.

It was a 10th consecutive league win for Liverpool, returning from the international break one point behind City in what looks like a two-team shootout to be the title.

City play away to Burnley later on Saturday.

With its players only recently returning from important international matches around the world, Liverpool were sometimes sluggish and gave up big chances in any half to third to last Watford.

The first came seconds before Jota’s goal, with goalkeeper Alisson blocking Kucka after the midfielder was played through clean.

The ball was immediately passed forward by Liverpool and Gomez, starting in front of Trent Alexander-Arnold at right back, curled up in a precise cross for Jota, who came in front of goalkeeper Ben Foster to find the net.

Joao Pedro missed Watford’s other big opportunity when the score was 1-0 and dragged a shot wide after the visitors got behind Liverpool’s defense again.

It was the first game of a busy April for Liverpool, who play away against City in the league next weekend. It comes between two matches against Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Liverpool have eight league games left and will win a 20th league championship by winning them all.
