A fire broke out at the Zurich Zoo on Friday afternoon: the “Strohballenberg” playground in the Leva Savannah caught fire and completely burned. There were no injured animals or zoo visitors. The cause of the fire is not clear yet.
Safety and Rescue Zurich reported on Friday evening that the emergency call was received at 3:30 p.m. As the name suggests, this play building at the Leva facility was made entirely of straw and therefore burned down in a very short time.

Due to the message, the extinguishing work continued till evening. There were various small nests of embers in the straw. So emergency services had to break bales of straw and spread the straw.
Individual embers had to be located using a thermal imaging camera attached to the drone. Then the fire brigade extinguished them separately so that there would be no further fire. How the fire started is a matter of investigation.
