The electoral process is always made up of various criticisms, successes and controversies with which candidates try to reach the position in contention. And thinking of looking for a better alternative, a proposal based on the policies of ancient Greece came up, In which the selection will be done through lottery.
Rodrigo Uprimani, a researcher at Digesticia and a professor at the National University, published a column in El Espectador in which he put forward the idea to give a twist to the congressional elections called Lotocracia, something that It has already been implemented in countries like Canada, Netherlands, Iceland and Ireland.

Why was Congress chosen by lottery?
This idea, studied with authors and origins in ancient civilizations such as the Greek and Italian regions in the twelfth century, has the principle of equality for all, to guarantee that every citizen has an equal chance of being elected.
Furthermore, according to Uprimani, “it deepens democracy and corrects many of its existing flaws”, which are a total of four for the teacher:
- It guarantees equality to be elected in contrast to current elections which benefit a few.
- The Congress, elected by Lott, “will be a representative sample of society”, as currently the labor sectors, workers, farmers and even women have few choices to choose from.
- It gives more freedom to the elected people because they will not come to office because of political favors, because of the aid they get in the campaign and they will have more focus on the public good.
- A draw ends with a specific division of an electoral process.

All this theory is also based on the recent past which gives an example of its operation. Uprimani shed light on what had happened in Ireland when Lottocracy “led to a referendum that widely approved same-sex marriage.”
And to bring it to the Colombian case, he assured that it could be “enforced by lottery in a civil assembly, which makes the motion, which will be presented for a referendum, on issues that Congress has not been able to address. ,
Considering the implementation of this type of process requires a number of changes to the electoral organization in Colombia, as certain requirements must be met in order to be a congressional candidate.
