LSU hires Brian Kelly from Notre Dame. It is a stunning move from one of the most accomplished college football coaches who have leapt from the most legendary sports program to the heart of the Southeast Conference.
The move was confirmed Monday night by a person familiar with the decision, who spoke to the Associated Press only on condition of anonymity because none of the schools were ready to make an official announcement. Yahoo! Sport was the first to announce the rental.
It was the second college football sensation in so many days, just over 24 hours after Southern California pulled Lincoln Riley out of Oklahoma.… LSU could have surpassed him by luring Kelly from South Bend to Baton Rouge.
Kelly, 60, became the best coach in Notre Dame history earlier this season, surpassing Knut Rockne.… In 12 seasons with Fighting Irish, Kelly is 113-40, including his current streak of five straight wins in double-digit numbers.
Notre Dame finished 11-1 on Saturday and are still vying for the third time in college football in four years.
Kelly, who did not respond to the text message sent by AP, was about to recruit staff in Notre Dame when the news broke.
No previous Notre Dame coaches have left the Irish, eight AP national championship winners, to take jobs at another school since the AP poll began in 1936. Rockne’s successor, Hunk Anderson, moved from Notre Dame to North Carolina after scoring 3 points. 5-1 in 1933.
LSU’s coaching search began in October, when an agreement was reached at the end of the season to part with coach Ed Orgeron. The change came less than two years after Coach O led the Tigers to the national championship.
LSU ended the regular season 6-6 on Saturday, upsetting Texas A&M at home in Orggeron’s last game.
Kelly agrees to take over the leadership of the Tigers just weeks after he publicly dismissed the idea of moving on when asked about a possible candidate for USC.
“No. I mean, look, I think Mike Tomlin had the best line, right? Kelly told reporters, referring to the Pittsburgh Steelers coach. , my wife will want to look at him first. I’ll have to manage her. “
LSU paid Orgeron about $ 9 million this season, becoming one of the highest paid college football coaches alongside Nick Saban of Alabama, Dabo Sweeney of Clemson and Jimbo Fisher of Texas A&M.
Orgeron was scheduled to earn an average of $ 7 million over the course of his contract, but has agreed to a $ 16.9 million ransom until 2025.
Kelly’s full salary at Notre Dame Private School is unknown, but it is believed to be in excess of $ 5 million a year.
In the last month alone, Michigan struck a 10-year $ 95 million deal with Mel Tucker, and Penn State extended James Franklin’s contract to 10 years at a price of $ 7.5 million per season. These deals are similar to the 10-year guaranteed contract that Fischer got from A&M when he was hired outside Florida at the end of the 2017 season.
Kelly will probably be next in line for the mega deal.
Fischer’s move – a national championship-winning coach leaving for another traditional power – was a rarity in college football.
Now, in a matter of days, two similar shocks have occurred. A carousel of coaches accelerated by everyone from impatient sports directors looking for a winner to early contract signing. for recruits and the always busy translation portal won’t slow down anytime soon. Oklahoma and Notre Dame are still some of the best professions in college football, and filling them in could generate more dominoes around the country.
Kelly has brought stability and success to Notre Dame, unlike the program in nearly two decades.
He was unable to add a national championship, but the Fighting Irish have won a league they haven’t achieved since Lou Holtz ran the program in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Irish won their last national title in 1988 under the leadership of Holz.
Notre Dame changed three coaches after Holz and never came close to sustaining success.
Notre Dame hired Kelly from Cincinnati to replace Charlie Weiss after the 2009 season. It took Kelly a while to find the right combination of coaching staff and recruiting strategies to turn the Irish into constant rivals. Since the Irish scored 4-8 points in 2016, Kelly’s record is 54-9, which is almost the same as Riley’s in Oklahoma (55-10).
In LSU, Kelly will follow Orgeron, who was a shooting star in Baton Rouge. The Cajun coach, who grew up on Bayou Lafourche and saw LSU as his dream, defeated skeptical fans and led one of the greatest college football teams in recent memory: The Tigers won the 19 national title, losing 15-0 to the Heisman Trophy winner. Joe Burrow.
LSU is not a place where only coaches with southern roots can thrive. Les Miles was a Michigan man who trained in Oklahoma before leading the Tigers to the national title. Saban, a West Virginia native, came from Michigan to win the national championship at the LSU.
Kelly, an Irish Catholic from Boston, also won national titles in Grand Valley State Division II. From there, he made his way to Central Michigan and then to Cincinnati, always winning more than his previous coaches.
He did the same at Notre Dame, but the national championship eluded him. As good as the fighting Irish were, they lost two playoff games and a BCS match against Alabama in 2012.
Kelly will now try to fill the last remaining hole in her resume at the LSU Hall of Fame, the school that turned its last three coaches into national champions.
