Luis Rubiales is no longer president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), but now the organization is obliged to appoint a new leader for Spain’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and in favor of the candidacy for the 2030 World Cup shared with Morocco and Portugal.
Pedro Rocha is the acting president and now there are two options for Iberian football to appoint Rubiales’ successor.
As indicated in article 31 of the RFEF statutes, the Board of Directors will be created as a Management Commission to call elections and for the new chief to assume office as soon as possible, in order to him to fulfill the rest of the mandate. which is equivalent to Rubiales. And the fact is that 2024 is the year of the mandatory election of the organization and it should be done normally.
The second, however, consists of bringing the 2024 elections to January, which by law must be held by all Spanish Sports Federations two months after the Olympic Games. This option also has the approval of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), which will allow elections to be called before the Olympic Games in the neighboring country.
“THERE ARE REAL POWERS THAT ARE PREVENTING MY RETURN” TO RFEF PRESIDENT: LUIS RUBIALES
After the fragment of the interview with Piers Morgan came to light in which he admitted his resignation as president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales made his words effective through a statement that he addressed to the organization and to public opinion in general. .
“(…) After the swift suspension made by FIFA, in addition to other procedures opened against me, it is obvious that I will not be able to return to my position,” the former leader wrote today.
“Insisting on waiting and holding on to it will not bring anything positive, either to the Federation or to Spanish football. Among other things, because there are de facto powers that prevent my return,” he added.
