RIYADH, Saudi Arabia ( Associated Press) — Real Madrid will have another chance to celebrate the Spanish Super Cup title in Saudi Arabia.
Madrid beat Valencia 4-3 on penalties in the semi-finals on Wednesday and will look to win their third Super Cup title in the Middle Eastern country on Sunday.
The defending champions will face either Barcelona or Real Betis, who play the other semi-final on Thursday. The championship game will take place at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh.
Valencia defender Erle Comert sent his shot over the crossbar and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Jose Luis Guy’s charge to give Madrid a pass.
The teams drew 1–1 in regular time and finished goalless on aggregate. The scorers were Karim Benzema and Samuel Lino.
Benzema also converted his shot in the tiebreaker, as did Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio for Real Madrid. Edinson Cavani, Alix Moriba and Hugo Guillamón scored for Valencia.
Asensio said, ‘It was a difficult match. “We fought a bit, but what matters is that we managed to advance to the final and we will have the chance to win another title.”
It is the fourth edition of the renewed Spanish Super Cup, played only between the league champion and the winner of the Copa del Rey. Now teams that were one step away from the title in both competitions also participate, turning the event into a four-way tournament to be held in Saudi Arabia, in a lucrative deal for the Spanish Football Federation.
Real Madrid secured the league title last season ahead of Barcelona, while Betis beat Valencia in the cup final.
Madrid won two of the first three editions of the new tournament in 2020 and 2022. Athletic Bilbao will be crowned in 2021 when the tournament takes place in Spain due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The scoring was opened by Madrid through a penalty by Benzema in the 39th minute after the Frenchman was fouled inside the area.
Early in the second half, Valencia equalized with Lino sending a cross from Tony Leto into the back of the net.
