PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW). A Maine woman on ventilator for 60 days after contracting COVID-19 was just a day after the life support system was shut down when she suddenly woke up.

Andrew Lerman said his mother, 69-year-old Bettina Lerman, tested positive for the virus in September.

Lerman said his mother was not vaccinated and had serious illnesses, including diabetes.

He said his mother fell into a coma for over a month and said her doctors were convinced she would not survive.

Lerman said the family was organizing the funeral and buying the headstone when her doctor called.

“He says,” I need you to come to the hospital immediately. ” I am what? Something is wrong?’ He says, “Your mom just woke up.” I literally dropped my phone. I thought what? I mean, because that day we had to shut down the life support system, ”Lerman said.

Lerman said that he and his wife rushed to the hospital.
