Mainz beat injured Gladbach 1-1 in Bundesliga

MAINZ, Germany (NWN) – Mainz struggled to draw Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-1 in the Bundesliga on Friday, giving the visitors a third straight win.

Sylvan Widmer scored for Mainz in the 76th minute, curling in a shot from the far post despite being faced by several defenders. It was the Swiss defender’s first Bundesliga goal.

The home team had been working hard before, with Gladbach relying on goalkeeper Yann Sommer to maintain their lead with a goal scored by Florian Neuhaus against the run of the 38th game.

With Swiss defender Nico Alvedi and compatriot Briel Ambolo both injured after the half-hour mark, it was shaping up to be a disappointing evening for Gladbach.

Mainz was better, but Neuhaus, who came for Alvedi in the 28th, scored on a rebound after goalkeeper Robin Gentner’s opening shot from Rémi Bensbaini was blocked away.

Gladbach, who recently beat Bayern Munich 5-0 in the German Cup, is stuck in the midtable in the Bundesliga, while Mainz is fifth through the rest of the 11th round.

On Saturday, league leaders Bayern Munich welcome third-placed Freiburg, who have the tightest defense ever, and Leipzig host Borussia Dortmund.
