Major listed Spanish construction companies (ACS, Ferrovial, Acciona, Sacyr, FCC and OHLA) are immersed in a talent search process in Spain to undertake major infrastructure projects in the United States (USA) and Canada.
According to the consulting company Catenon, in these two countries the leadership of Spanish companies is “indisputable”, a situation that is made clear by the fact that only five of these Spanish companies account for 50% of the major projects.
In the United States, its president, Joe Biden, has already announced an investment plan to attack a sophisticated infrastructure program, while in Canada its geography also requires undertaking major projects and their maintenance, especially taking into account extreme weather situations.
The profiles they are looking for are Road, Canal and Port engineers, civil engineers, topographers or financiers, according to the growing importance of the concession model for companies and the Administration.
ACS has the largest portfolio of all Spanish companies in North America, with a strong presence in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver, in Canada, while in the United States it recently won a marine project of 2,840 million dollars (2,573 million euros).
Acciona has been present in Canada for more than 20 years and has carried out major projects such as the Fort Saint John or Victoria hospitals in British Columbia or the SEST highway. In the United States, he designed, built and operated about 90 kilometers of highways.
For its part, Ferrovial has just received its largest project in the world, for the design, construction and financing of one section of the Toronto (Canada) railway extension line.
For Sacyr, business development in Canada and the United States is the company’s key objective in its current strategic plan. It entered the Canadian market in March 2021 with its first two construction projects and has been present in the United States since 2018 through the construction of highways in the states of Florida and Texas.
For its part, OHLA is part of the ‘top ten’ contractors in the latter country, achieving in 2021 new awards worth more than 1,150 million euros (1,378 million dollars) with contracts such as the improvement of the capacity of the I-5. in California, the largest indoor sports facility in North America (Destination Sport Miami) or the rehabilitation of the West 79th Street roundabout, which is included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Finally, FCC has been present in Canada for more than 25 years and in the United States since 2007, with projects such as the expansion of a section of Metro Toronto or the first drag bridge built in the state of California.
