Miami, Dec 16 (PTI) A man has been arrested for allegedly pouring bleach, alcohol and soap into an Asian-style pond with carp at Aventura Mall, a shopping center in that city’s South Florida (USA), killing about 20 fish. Went.
Canine Lathniel Sanders, 30, is facing 20 charges of animal cruelty and resisting an officer without violence, according to local media reports Friday.
Local police officers arrested Sanders on Thursday for the incident.
The report said witnesses and surveillance cameras caught Sanders throwing the products into the pond, which contained about 50 fish, each worth about $1,000.
After the liquid was added, several fish tried to come to the surface, at which point Sanders took the opportunity to touch them.
Members of the shopping center staff and police went to the scene, a moment Sanders took advantage of to escape, although he was ultimately arrested, according to reports.
More than 20 fish died as a result of the incident, which the mall says totaled the cost of cleaning the pond and caring for the rest of the fish at about $25,000.
Sanders, a Miami Gardens resident, was jailed and held on $11,000 bail.
“Yesterday, someone dumped a substance in our pond and was arrested by Aventura Police. Our team immediately acted to protect the fish in the pond and have been a constant partner with Miami-Dade County Animal Services”, The shopping center said in a statement.
“Fortunately, many of the fish were rescued and teams continue to monitor their health and pond maintenance,” the statement concluded.
