A 42-year-old man fell 100 meters in Austria after trying to take a photo on a mountain to post on his Instagram profile.
The test subject from England climbed a staircase in the Dachstein Mountains near Salzburg on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. However, the tourist fell from the suspended staircase called “via ferrata” which was attached with steel cables.
Two helicopters from emergency teams and paramedics flew to the scene for rescue. However, there was nothing they could do for the man who ultimately lost his life. Rescue teams recovered the body of the person who landed at the bottom of the stairs.
The staircase is 40 meters long and connects the lower part of the Donnerkogel with the body part of the same peak. Authorities ruled out the involvement of a third person in the incident.
“According to the results of the police investigation, it is clearly an accident,” a Salzburg police spokesman told the Daily Mirror.
Why is the Dachstein Mountains so popular?
The Dachstein Mountains are located in the Northern Limestone Alps in Austria. It is a group of 439 mountain ranges, each with its own name.
This location is the attraction of the via ferrata, which is used by influencers and other social media users to take photos in this area. Visitors use harnesses to climb and avoid falls.
But in 2020, extreme athlete Stefanie Millinger climbed the ladder without a harness and in a ballet dress.
A portal promoting the area as a tourist attraction notes that these stairs offer impressive views of a glacier as well as the great heights of Austria’s highest mountain, the Großglockner.
